FREQUENLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About Coeur Custom

Who designs Coeur Custom boats?

Each design is developed collaboratively, blending client vision with the experience of seasoned designers, naval architects, and our in-house craftsmen. This collaborative approach ensures every vessel is both visually distinctive and structurally sound.

How long have you been building custom wooden boats?

Coeur Custom’s team brings decades of combined experience in wooden boat construction and restoration on Lake Coeur d’Alene, with a long-standing reputation for craftsmanship and engineering precision.

What makes Coeur Custom different?

Every boat is hand-built from the keel up. We prioritize structural integrity, refined design, and performance — ensuring each vessel is as capable as it is beautiful.

Design and Customization

Can my boat be fully customized?

Yes. Layout, materials, propulsion, finishes, and features are all tailored to your preferences. Every Coeur Custom project is individually commissioned.

Can I bring my own design ideas?

Absolutely. Many projects begin with sketches, inspiration, or concepts from the client. Our team collaborates closely to refine these ideas into a cohesive design.

What design support do you provide?

We work collaboratively with experienced designers, engineers, and craftsmen to translate your vision into a fully realized vessel.

Build and Construction

Are Coeur Custom boats built using a production line?

No. Every boat is hand-built from the keel up. While we utilize modern technology where appropriate, craftsmanship remains at the core of every build.

How long does a custom build take?

Build timelines vary depending on size and complexity. Projects have ranged from approximately 4 months to 22 months.

What does a custom build cost?

Because each vessel is custom commissioned, pricing varies widely. Past projects have ranged from approximately $45,000 to over $1,500,000 depending on scope and specifications.

Can I visit during construction?

Yes. We welcome clients to visit the shop and see their project progress. We also provide updates throughout the build.

Materials & Craftsmanship

What wood is typically used?

Most Coeur Custom boats are constructed using varieties of African mahogany, often complemented by teak in finish areas.

Are your boats made of fiberglass?

No. Our boats are constructed using traditional wooden boat building techniques. However, we may incorporate modern materials such as carbon fiber or fiberglass fabrics where beneficial for performance or structural requirements.

What finish systems do you use?

We use a range of finishing techniques, including traditional hand-applied varnish and advanced catalyzed finishes, depending on the desired look and performance.

Are wooden boats heavy?

We carefully engineer our boats to maintain a strong yet lightweight structure. In many cases, comparable fiberglass boats have similar overall weight.

Ownership and Maintenance

Do wooden boats need to be refinished every year?

No. Modern finishes are highly durable and designed to minimize frequent refinishing. With proper care and maintenance, finishes can last for many years.

What affects the finish most?

Sun exposure is the primary factor. When wear begins to appear, additional finish can be applied to protect the wood without stripping the entire surface.

How durable are Coeur Custom boats?

Our construction techniques focus on structural integrity and longevity, ensuring each vessel performs reliably for years to come.

Beneath the surface

What defines a great wooden boat is not the varnish.

IT IS THE BALANCE.
THE STRUCTURE.
THE UNSEEN DISCIPLINE.

At Coeur Custom, every vessel is engineered before it is admired. Designed with intention. Crafted by masters. Built to outlast seasons and expectations alike.

This is not production. This is commission.

From the heart of Coeur d’Alene, we set a standard that does not waver.
